Mt. SAC Softball falls in Super Regional opener to Bakersfield, 7-4

(Walnut, CA) A 22-game winning streak came to an end in the 7-4 loss to Bakersfield at a CCCAA Super Regional game on Friday night (May 13).

With game one of the three-game series going to the Renegades, the Mounties must now win two games to advance to the State Championship next week.

Mt. SAC (39-4) had a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, but Bakersfield (37-7) scored four runs in the top of the inning for the 7-4 lead.

The Mounties took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after second baseman Asia Chacon singled, stole second, moved over to third on a wild pitch and came home on an infield out by designated player Desiree Bravo.

The Renegades took their first lead of the game with a run in the second and two more in the fourth on a two-run home run by left fielder Shelby Buchanan to lead 3-2.

The Mounties, who were held to four hits in the game by Bakersfield pitcher, Talia Nielson (28-4), answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

First baseman Briana Goris (3 walks, R), walked and Bravo along with Emily Barba reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.

Pinch hitter Alyssa Gonzales (1 for 1, 2 RBIs) singled to center field, scoring Goris, Bravo and Barba came home on an error by the Bakersfield center fielder for the 4-3 lead.

Mt. SAC reliever Grace Pieson (22-4) suffered only her fourth loss of the season, as she took over for starter Serena Navarrete (4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 Ks) in the fifth inning.

The series continues today (May 14), with the winner moving on to the state championships next Thursday through Sunday (May 19-22) at Bakersfield.
