TAMING TIGERS

Fullerton hosted Riverside City College on Wednesday night and held off the Tigers 3-1. 

It was a good win for the Hornets, who earned their first Orange Empire Conference win of the young season. FC now stands at 5-7 overall with an OEC record of 1-1, while RCC is now 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the OEC. 

In the first set, Fullerton took a 5-0 lead and then slowly let it slip away as Riverside won it 25-21.  

The Hornets regrouped for the second set opening with a 4-1 advantage. Pushing their lead at 22-11, FC won it 25-14.  

The two teams fought it out in the third set with Fullerton taking a 13-10 lead. Holding an 18-12 lead, the Hornets looked to win the set with ease, but the Tigers jumped back in it pulling within a point (24-23) before Jade McIntyre's kill won it for FC 25-23. 

The fourth and final set was another close one with RCC leaping out to a 7-4 lead. Fullerton fought back taking a 12-9 advantage before the Tigers tied it up at 21-21. Battling it out at the end, it was Camille Castillo's kill that secured the win for the Hornets finishing it at 25-23. 

Mareta Poe had a strong game performance with a season-high 19 kills along with 10 digs. McIntyre added 10 kills, while Castillo and Arianna Islas brought down 6 each. Anne Mayfield totaled a career-high 34 assists along with 22 digs. Samantha Martinez chipped in with 15 digs and Maile Grace Tabon had 10. 

Up Next: The Hornets (5-7 overall, 1-1 OEC) will get back it again Friday (Sep. 23) night when they travel to Saddleback College. Match time is at 6:00 pm.
