Pirates regroup, rebound with win at Riverside

RIVERSIDE -- After an inspired and hard-fought matchup with highly-ranked Irvine Valley, the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team continued its strong play with a straight-set win at Riverside City College on Friday night.

Coast (11-1, 4-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) topped the Tigers (4-7, 1-4) in three, 26-24, 25-16, 25-15, just two days after a marathon battle with Lasers (a five-set loss, 25-20, 25-23, 25-27, 17-25, 15-7).

In the loss to the Lasers, Coast was led by Summer Hanks, who had 21 kills and 13 digs. Sara Enright added 12 kills and 22 digs, while Brisa Zapata-Reaves added 10 kills and 10 digs.

Libero Emily Payne continued her fine play on defense with a team-best 27 digs, while Ellie Winter dished out 39 assists and Amanda Cueva added 14 assists.

Against the Tigers, Zapata-Reaves led the way with 12 kills, while Hanks added 10 kills and Enright contributed seven. Payne again anchored the defense with 14 digs, while Winter came up with 18 assists.

The schedule doesn't get any easier this week for the Pirates. Following the bye on Wednesday, Coast will take on rival Golden West, at GWC, on Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. Fans ARE allowed at the match (masks required).
