Even though the 2023 WVC Pre-Season Pairs Tournament was technically a scrimmage without official scores being kept, the action at the West Valley Beach Volleyball Complex was top level. Four of the state's top teams - Feather River, Fresno City, Sierra and WVC - took advantage of a crystal-clear January day to tune up for the regular season slated to begin next week.
While WVC coach Armen Zakarian's opening day lineup is undetermined, Viking beach fans got a glimpse of five pairs with considerable upside. Pairs in action included projected WVC 1's Flor Porras/Tristin Sahlie, 2's Sydney Rogers/Devin Derecho, 3's Kiana Manson/Gabrielle Carbonel, 4's Sydney Pista/Amelie Moya and 5's Maggie Carroll/Alex Franklin.
The regular season begins Feb. 10, with the Vikings hosting Santa Barbara City College.
