Santiago Canyon sweeps Vaqueros, 3-0

SBCC suffered its second straight road setback on Wednesday as Santiago Canyon registered a 3-0 men's volleyball sweep in Orange, Calif. The scores were 25-23, 25-13, 25-22.

Keoni Thiim, a 6-0 freshman outside hitter from Honolulu, led the Vaqueros (0-2) with seven kills and a .385 hitting percentage. Luke Hetherington, a 6-5 middle blocker from Newbury Park High, was tough in the middle, converting six kills on seven swings for a sizzling .857 percentage.

Calvin Sanborn added six kills and three aces. SBCC had four ace serves and 14 errors.

"Luke played well, bringing offense and energy," said fourth-year coach Jon Newton. "Keoni did a great job being a spark off the bench. We're still figuring things out, clearly, and finding the right starting six with chemistry."

The Vaqueros will play their home opener on Friday, hosting perennial power Orange Coast at 6 p.m.
