Volleyball: Net performance leads Cerritos to sweep

It was like night and day for the Cerritos College volleyball team at the net in their last two matches. The Falcons (2-1), who swept host San Bernardino Valley College, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 on Friday, hit at an impressive .333 clip in the victory. Two days earlier, the team defeated Santa Ana College in four sets, but hit only .007 percent. The team will look for their third win in a row next Tuesday in a 5:00 p.m. non-conference match at West Los Angeles College.

In the win over the Wolverines, freshman Jayda Harris-Amete (La Mirada HS) led the way with 13 kills on 26 attempts and did not have any errors, while she also contributed three service aces. Twin sisters Carissa Mendibles (Downey HS) and Marissa Mendibles (Downey HS) combined for six kills without an error, with Marissa Mendibles leading the team with 11 digs. Setter Carissa Mendibles directed the offense with 26 assists.

Also a threat at the net, freshman Aiyana Sierra (La Mirada HS) posted seven kills, with freshmen Maleah Gonzales (Schurr HS) and Abigail Gutierrez (Downey HS) combining for 10 kills, while Gutierrez played well in the back row with seven digs and had a team-high four service aces.

It was also the first match of the season where everyone in uniform saw playing time.
