Comets 2-0 in series against Jaguars

SAN MARCOS, CA (3/5/2020) – Palomar moved to 3-1 in Pacific Coast Conference play following a 3-0 and 5-4 win over Southwestern College to take the first two games in the five-game series.

On Tuesday, freshman pitcher Jacob Widener, pitched his first career shutout. Throwing all nine innings, Widener struck out seven batter and had one walk. This was the first game all season the Comets went with one pitcher to get the job done. The Comets scored two runs in the third and one more in the seventh. Brandon Luna, the first baseman had a big day at the plate going 2-3 with an RBI. Second baseman Braden Sanford was 1-4 with one RBI and two runs. Brady Lavoie, the right fielder, was 0-3 with one RBI.

The two teams met again on Thursday for a Comet home game. Palomar got out to an early five-run lead in the second inning. The Comets scored their five runs on four hits and three errors. Lavoie got the party started when he reached first on an error by the third baseman. Evan Ianniciello singled to advance Lavoie to second. Cameron Rowles then reached first on an error by the second baseman while Lavoie and Ianniciello advanced. With bases loaded Noah Hemphill singled to score Lavoie. Micha Anselmo then singled to scored Ianniciello. Kellen McCoy then reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on a Jaguar error while Hemphill and Rowles scored. After a single by Sanford, with runners on the corners, Jaisten Cabatbat flew out to centerfield for the final run for the Comets.

Dane Padrnos pitched five innings for the Comets to get the win. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out one batter. Gavin Kinney pitched the remainder of the game where he allowed four hits and struck out three.

Palomar improves to 7-11 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The men will be home on Saturday, Mar. 7 for a 1 p.m. start time against Imperial Valley College.
