Cerritos College freshman pitcher Samantha Islas (Roosevelt HS) needed only the lone run her team scored in the second inning and went on to shut out host El Camino College on Thursday, 1-0. The South Coast Conference win by the Falcons (22-9, 12-3) keeps them 2 1/2 games ahead of Long Beach City College for second place. The team will host Fullerton College (15-16-1) in a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Nancy Kelly Field.

In the second inning, where Cerritos scored the game's only run, freshman third baseman Brooklyn Bedolla (Mayfair HS) led off with a walk. With two outs, Bedolla stole second base and then advanced to third base on a passed ball. That led to freshman shortstop Miranda Diaz (California HS) driving a single to right field, which plated Bedolla.

As for Islas (15-5), she tossed her seventh complete game shutout of the season and second in as many starts. The Warriors (18-15, 9-8) did advance a runner to second base in the bottom of the second and third innings, but Islas got out of those situations. From the fourth inning on, Islas retired 10 batters in a row until a one-out single in the seventh inning ended up getting stranded at second base when the final out was recorded.

At the plate, freshman first baseman Richere Leduc (California HS) had a pair of hits, while freshman catcher Vickey Najera (El Rancho HS) reached base twice.
