Fifteen straight set wins for volleyball team with sweep of RCC

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team, even down some players, has turned it up.

The Lasers swept their fifth straight opponent in Orange Empire Conference play, defeating Riverside, 25-11, 25-9, 25-12, on Wednesday night at home.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 18 in the state, improved its record to 12-3 overall and 8-2 in conference.

The Lasers jumped out to a 11-4 lead in the first set and were up, 20-5, after back-to-back kills by freshman opposite Jayli Nealy

IVC moved to set point at 24-11 on a kill by freshman outside hitter Emily Guenter and then Guenter closed the set out with another kill.

The Lasers streaked to a huge lead to in the second set, taking a 13-3 lead. Two kills by freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn Karsten and Nealy led the charge. 

Irvine Valley was up, 21-7, after a kill by Guenter and it was a 22-7 advantage after a block by freshman middle blocker Kendall Fraser and freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez.

A kill by Sanchez put IVC at set point at 24-9, and RCC not getting the ball over the net ended the set at 25-9.

RCC won the first two points of the third set, but the Lasers tied it at 3-3, on a kill by Guenter.

That started a 7-1 run for IVC. An ace by Guenter gave Irvine Valley a 10-4 lead.

And the Lasers took a 17-8 advantage on a kill by Guenter.

A block by Karsten made it 19-8 and a combo block by Sanchez and Karsten sent IC to a 22-8 lead.

Nealy came down with a kill to give the Lasers match point at 24-12 and RCC netted to end the match.

The Lasers hit .378 as a team on the night with Sanchez leading the offense with 24 assists as her first time as the starting setter this season.

Nealy finished with 13 kills and hit .318, Guenter had 10 kills, hit .318 and added nine digs, Karsten added five kills and five blocks and freshman outside hitter Angelina Griego contributed five kills and nine digs.

Sanchez and sophomore libero Alexandra Pestolis each also chipped in eight digs.

The Lasers have a big match on Friday in a conference showdown at Orange Coast at 6 p.m. The two teams are tied for second place in the OEC standings.
