Pitching leads the way in 5-4 win for Pirates

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College baseball team picked up some much-needed pitching success en route to a 5-4 Orange Empire Conference win over Irvine Valley on Thursday at the OC Great Park.

Pirate starter, Brett Soulages, pitched into the seventh inning and allowed four runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The back end of the bullpen took care of the rest as Chase Rousselo (5-0) threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before Matt Maloney picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

Coast (11-7, 1-1 in the OEC) trailed 2-0 early before tying things up in the fourth on an RBI-sacrifice fly by Isaiah Morales and an RBI-single by Jordan Ku. Morales later came through with a two-run triple in the sixth to put Coast up, 4-2. IVC tied things up with solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings before Cary Arbolida a deep fly ball to center field. Joey Lapolla made an incredible catch, but Tyler Weaver used his speed to come all the way around from second base to score the eventual winning-run for the Pirates on the play.

Arbolida went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Coast, while Logan Jackson added two hits to help lead OCC's 10-hit attack on the Lasers (12-7, 1-1). For the Lasers, Noah Madole went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

The Pirates and Lasers will wrap up their three-game series at OCC's John Altobelli Park on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m. Prior to the game, both teams will honor the former OCC head coach as the school officially dedicates and renames the ballpark after Altobelli. Both teams will also wear No. 14, in honor of Altobelli, who wore the 14 for 27 seasons as the Pirates' head coach, winning 705 games, eight OEC titles, and four state championships.
