VENTURA – Despite matching Ventura 7-7 in hits, the SBCC baseball team was held to three runs in a 9-3 road defeat in its series opener with the Pirates.

Center fielder Matty Fung set a season-high with four hits, tallying a run and an RBI. Second baseman Gavin Haimovitz finished with two RBI and a hit.

The Pirates (9-11, 4-3) struck first with a solo home run in the second, but the Vaqueros (10-7, 3-1) would tie it in the top of the third. Fung singled before advancing to second on a wild pitch and Haimovitz brought him home with a single of his own, making it 1-1.

Ventura extended its lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the third and would explode for six runs on five hits in the fifth to take a 9-1 advantage.

The Vaqueros scratched once more in the top of the seventh, with runs from Gabe Baldavino and Isaiah Fleming. Baldavino led off with a walk, followd by a Fleming single. Fung then doubled to get Baldavino a run. Haimovitz later hit a deep sacrifice fly out to center to bring Fleming in, making it 9-3. That would be the final run of the day.
