Strong second half propels Pirates past L.A. City

COSTA MESA -- After a lethargic opening half, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team found another gear and pulled away from visiting L.A. City College, 3-0, on Thursday night inside LeBard Stadium.

After both teams failed to score in the opening half, the Pirates (7-0-1) picked up the intensity and found the back of the net three times en route to the win.

Sydney Powell had a pair of goals, Lily Carroll added a goal and an assist and Kate Hass chipped in two assists for the Pirates, while goalkeeper Jessica Gardner (four saves) and the Pirate defense clamped down and kept the Cubs (1-3-1) away from any scoring chances over the final 45 minutes.

With L.A. City pressing on defense, it was a matter of time before a Pirate forward would spring free and in the 57th minute, Powell took a Carroll chip-in and scored to put OCC ahead for good.

It was Powell again -- this time off a feed from Hass -- in the 74th minute for some insurance for the Pirates before Carroll slipped in behind the defense and found the back of the net of Hass' second helper of the night.

After allowing eight first-half shots and a couple of scoring opportunities, the Pirate defense held LACC without a second-half shot and finished the night with an 18-8 advantage in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner-kick opportunities.

OCC will now begin Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday at home against defending co-conference champion, Saddleback, beginning at 3 p.m.
