BASEBALL: BAUMS AWAY

Hornet Head Coach Chad Baum earned his first career win at home Thursday as Fullerton fought off Mt. San Jacinto College 7-5.

The third game was a charm for FC as Sawyer Chesney's two-run 7th inning blast over the left center ivy gave the team enough to lock down the first win of the 2020 season.

Mt. San Jacinto took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on a throwing error that brought Nathan Baker across home plate.

Fullerton answered back with a run to tie it up in the next offensive series. Tony Accordino ripped a single to left that scored Ryan Lamastra.

In the 2nd inning the Hornets broke off three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Nolan Ewens got it started with a hard-hit double to right field advancing Chesley, who got on by an error, to third. Brock Denbo came up and doubled in both Chesley and Ewens. Lamastra hit a SAC fly to center giving Brock Denbo the chance to score from third.

Accordino got the 3rd inning going on a pretty line-drive to left field for a single, and Jack Janes knocked him in on a single to right center.

Fullerton had a healthy 5-1 lead going into the 5th the Eagles began to chip away grabbing a run on Ajay Parcero's double to center scoring Baker. They scored another run in the 6th when Parcero hit into a fielder's choice allowing Gabriel Ponce de Leon to cross over from third.

Up 5-3 in the 7th Chesney hit the Hornet's first homer of the year, a two-run 480 foot blast.

The game sailed into the top of the 9th with FC up 7-3, but the Eagles had other plans. Peter Brooks hammered a high-deep shot over the left field fence with Parcero on board. With the game on the line (7-5), Fullerton reliever Adam Armstrong came in with the bases loaded and recorded the game's final two outs sealing the victory.

Hornet starting pitcher Bryce Barnett got the win going 4 innings on 2 hits, no earned runs, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Armstrong earned his first save of the season going .2 innings with no runs and 1 strikeout.

Accordino led Fullerton at the plate going 3 for 4 on the day with 2 runs and 1 RBI. Chelsey was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, 2 runs, and a home run. Janes was 2 for 4 with a RBI.

Up Next: The Hornets (1-2 overall) will get back on Hornet Field tomorrow (Friday, January 31st) for a game with Moorpark College at 2:00 pm.

First-year Hornet Head Coach Chad Baum is congratulated by Skipper Nick Fuscardo after today's big win.
