COD Women’s Soccer grabs late goal, opens 2021 with win, 2-1

COD (1-0) hosted their first game in 21 months and it did not disappoint, as sophomore forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) grabbed both goals for the Roadrunners, as Desert opened up 2021 with a win over the Los Angeles City Cubs (0-1), 2-1.

The heat was intense as the game was delayed an hour due to unsafe heat related weather issues. The action on the field showed how difficult the situation was as neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, with both teams going into the locker room at halftime, with a score of 0-0.

In their inaugural season, the Cubs played a feisty 90 minutes, scoring the first goal of the contest in the 50th minute.

Desert would tie the game up in the 73rd minute, when freshman midfielder Eva Lupita Torres (Thermal Coachella Valley) found Castillo on the right side of the net, poking in the shot from underneath the diving LA City keeper, leveling the score at 1-1.

The Roadrunners would secure the win in extra time on a corner by freshman midfielder Zaynah Cortez (Palm Springs H.S.) which bounced off of a couple of Desert noggins, and Castillo pushed the header around the goal post to snag the opening day win.

Freshman goal keeper Jessica Uribe (Indio Shadow Hills) played well in her debut for the Red and Gold. Playing all 90 minutes and grabbing her first win in net for the Roadrunners. Castillo would lead the team in shots taken with six total and sophomore midfielder Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.) had four total shots.
