Big Inning Propels SBVC Past VVC

Pitcher Sofia Gonzalez had a perfect game through four innings, and the San Bernardino Valley College softball team exploded for seven runs after two were out in the third inning to cruise past Victor Valley College 9-1 in five innings at the Drayson Center on the campus of Loma Linda University.

Gonzalez was handling the Victor Valley lineup from the circle, striking out eight - including five in a row at one point - and not allowing a baserunner until Marissa Norton led off with a bloop single to right field in the fifth.

But by then, most of the damage had been done. The Wolverines took advantage of three Victor Valley errors in the third inning - all with two outs - to blow the game wide open.

Tara Walker started the rally with a double to right center. Aubrey Slider followed by hitting a sharp grounder to second that was bobbled, allowing Slider to reach first. Walker never stopped on the play, scoring from second to give SBVC a 1-0 lead.

The wheels fell off from there for the Rams. Hannah Guilfoos followed with a line single that glanced off pitcher Alina Lopez's glove and went into center, allowing Slider to move to third. Guilfoos took second on defensive indifference, which allowed her to score on Sereya Diaz's single to left. Kaitlynn LaFleur followed with a single to left that got Diaz to third, with LaFleur taking second on the play. Audi Pettaway then singled up the middle, scoring both runners, and she took second as the throw went to home. Arianna Gaeta followed with a single along the left field line to move Pettaway to third. Jaslyn Sanchez, who led off the inning with a fly out, popped the ball into right field, where it was misplayed, allowing Pettaway to score and Gaeta to move to third. Monique Davila then followed with a grounder to short that was misplayed, allowing her to reach safely and score Gaeta.

Slider then led off the fourth by lining a ball down the right field and into the corner. By the time the ball made its way back to the infield, Slider was rounding third and headed home, which she reached without a throw.

Victor Valley finally broke through in the top of the fifth to extend the game. But in the bottom half of the inning, Gaeta led off against reliver Anissa Lopez, and was hit by her first pitch. Gizelle Mascorro ran for Gaeta, and was sacrificed to second by Sanchez. After Nataly Gutierrez popped out, Walker hit the ball through the left side, and Mascorro slid in safely to end the game due to the run rule.

LaFleur led the way at the plate, going 3-for-3, while Diaz finished the day 2-for-3, and Walker was 2-for-4.

Gonzalez ended the game allowing three hits, with no walks.
