Pirates sweep past Bobcats

COSTA MESA -- Brisa Zapata-Reaves ripped seven kills to the lead the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team to a straight-set win over visiting Saddleback College on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Faith Jones and Paige Cutwright each had six kills to help support the Pirate offense throughout the match.

The win keeps OCC (13-2, 6-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) in a second-place tie with Irvine Valley (10-3, 6-2) through the first round of OEC play. Coast kicks off Round 2 at Fullerton College on Wednesday (6 p.m.) before returning home to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Santa Ana, also at 6 p.m.

After breezing through the first two sets, the Pirates kept ahead of the visiting Bobcats throughout most of the third. But, trailing 15-11, the Bobcats had their best burst of volleyball of the evening with an 8-2 run to grab a 19-17 advantage.

Coast managed to tie things up with back-to-back points, but Saddleback scored three of the next four points to grab a 22-20 lead.

But the Pirates found their second wind and used a wide Saddleback serve, a Cutwright kill, a block from Jones and Cutwright, a Zapata-Reaves kill and a botched Bobcat exchange to collect five straight points and win the match.
