Men's volleyball team takes down Long Beach City and El Camino

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team showed it can be one of the top teams in the California Community College Athletic Association at the John Altobelli Memorial Quad on Saturday at Orange Coast.

Irvine Valley, Orange Coast, Long Beach City and El Camino - the four teams that reached the semifinals of the CCCAA State Championships last season - played in a crossover on Saturday.

And the Lasers came away with two wins to move their record to 3-0 overall.

IVC started Saturday with a 25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-12 victory over Long Beach City. The Vikings lost to Orange Coast in the state final last year.

Sophomore opposite Demetre Gossett led the Lasers with 18 kills, five aces and six digs.

Freshman outside hitters Damon Kooiman and Zach McEntire each added nine kills for the Lasers.

Freshman setter Kaina Alvarez ran the offense with 37 assists and sophomore libero Adam Schulte contributed 16 digs.

Irvine Valley then swept El Camino, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15, later in the day on Saturday.

Gossett had another double-digit kill performance with 10 kills in the win. He hit .368 in the match.

Freshman Matt Reid added six kills and hit .857 and sophomore middle blocker Julio Gutierrez chipped in five kills and hit .714.

Kooiman had five kills, 11 digs and two blocks, Schulte ended with 16 digs and Alvarez finished with 17 assists in the win for IVC.

Irvine Valley is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Moorpark at 6 p.m.
