Pirates topple Bulldogs in five, 12-2

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team made quick work of visiting Allan Hancock College with a 12-2, five-inning win on Thursday at the OCC Softball Complex.

The bats came to life for the Pirates (3-6) right away as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the first two innings and never looked back from there.

Ariana Williams went 3-for-3 with three runs and five RBI for Coast, while Gianna Gozo added a solo home run to the Pirate scoresheet.

In the first, Emilie Lapena walked and scored on an RBI-double off the bat of Williams, who later scored on an RBI ground out by Lydia Gonzalez.

Gozo led off the second with her solo HR and it appeared that the Pirate runs that inning would end there. But Coast took advantage of a costly error and plated four more runs to make it 7-0. Williams added a two-run double in the frame, while Gonzalez drove in her second run of the game with an RBI-single to right.

Coast capped off the run support in the fourth with five runs on just two hits as two walks and a pair of defensive miscues helped bring in the five Pirate runs. Williams' third hit was a two-run single to center that scored Lapena and Natalie Lawthers, who both didn't have a hit, but scored a combined five times in the game.

That run support was more than enough for starting pitcher Isabel McIlroy, who pitched five innings to pick up the complete-game win, allowing two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts.

The Pirates will return to the OCC Softball Complex on Monday to take on Imperial Valley, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
