Mt. San Antonio Mounties ride five state titles to sixth straight NATYCAA Cup; Sierra finishes second

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Mt. San Antonio College started strong in the fall by capturing California Community College Athletic Association championships in men’s and women’s cross country, and then added state titles in softball and men’s and women’s track & field, to finish first in the CCCAA standings for the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators all-sports competition for the sixth consecutive year, it was announced on Monday.
Mt. San Antonio scored 175 points to take home top honors for thewhile Sierra College (Rocklin) was second with 153.5. San Joaquin Delta from Stockton (149.5), Orange Coast (148.0) and Fresno City (144.0) rounded out the top five.
In all, 10 schools - five from Northern California and Southern California each - finished with at least 100 points . Joining the first five in hitting the century mark were Cerritos (143.5), Riverside City (142.5), American River (142.5), Santa Rosa Junior College (101.5) and Santa Barbara City (100.5).
A college is awarded points based on its team’s final positions in post-conference competition. Each college’s top-five men’s and top-five women’s team results count toward the school’s overall point total. On the men’s side, besides winning banners in cross country and track, Mt. San Antonio counted top-five finishes in wrestling (2nd, 19.0 pts), soccer (T-3rd, 17.5) and wrestling (2nd, 19.0). The Mounties’ trio of state titles among its women’s teams were supported by strong showings in swimming & diving (8th, 13.0) and basketball (T-9th. 14.5). They also scored points in football, women’s water polo and men’s swimming & diving but those points were not counted among the top five of their respective men’s and women’s totals.
Sierra has been a constant among the top-10 finishers since winning the NATYCAA Cup during its first year in 2003-04. The Wolverines didn’t win any state championships in 2017-18 but had three runner-up performances in men’s swimming & diving, women’s golf and women’s water polo. This marks the second time they’ve finished as high as second in the final standings after also doing so in 2006-07.
Mt. San Antonio was also first and third, respectively, in the NATYCAA Cup State Associations Division and Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, while Sierra took third and seventh. The Learfield Cup is awarded to the top overall two-year college. The CCCAA had eight of the top 15 schools in the final Learfield Cup standings.
NATYCAA is the professional organization of two-year college athletic administrators and membership is open to all two-year institutions throughout the country. The NATYCAA Awards were designed to recognize and reward overall program excellence at the two-year college level. The criterion for the State Association’s division was developed by the CCCAA in conjunction with the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA).
