NORWALK - With Day 1 of the CCCAA State Wrestling Championships in the books, two-time defending champion Fresno City College holds a 42.5 point lead over their nearest competitor. The Rams, who have qualified nine wrestlers to the championship semifinals on Saturday morning, also have all 12 of their entries still active. Sacramento City College is in second place with 63.5 points and holds the slimmest of leads over third place Palomar College, who has 63 team points. Mt. San Antonio College sits in fourth place with 51.5 points, while tournament host Cerritos College is in fifth place at 51 points.
There were a couple of first-day upsets, with #4-seeded Trevor Bagan of Santa Rosa Junior College defeating the #2-seeded wrestler from Palomar, Isaac Guerrero, 10-8 to qualify for the semifinals, with Oliver Rivero of Santa Ana College, the #3-seed at 133 pounds from the South, posting a win over #2-seeded Kyle Jimenez of Fresno City, who was forced to retire due to an injury in the second period. At 141 pounds, Josh Fuentes-Norikiy of Santa Ana, the #4-seed, posted a major decision over #2-seeded Logan Garcia of Lassen, 17-8 to reach the championship semifinals.
The biggest upset of the day was #1-seeded Nick Kimball of Palomar College getting pinned in 1:40 against the #4-seed from Northern California, Steven Abbott of Sacramento City at 184 pounds. Fresno City's Matthew Martinez, the #3-seed from Northern California at 197 pounds, recorded a 15-7 major decision over the #1-seed from the South, Anthony Stenschke.
