(Walnut) By John M. Sherrard – The Mounties, behind the one-hit pitching of freshman Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings (Chino HS), shutout visiting Chaffey College, 8-0, in a game halted after six innings due to the 8-run rule in game one of the CCCAA Southern California Regional playoffs Saturday afternoon.
Game two will be on Sunday at 12:00 pm at Mt. SAC.
Ending the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field was sophomore first baseman Aimee Rodriguez (John Burroughs HS), scoring sophomore left fielder Danielle Jeffress (Kaiser HS).
Prior to the game-ending fly ball in the sixth was an RBI single by Jeffress (2 for 3, 2 runs, RBI), scoring freshman shortstop Kayla Sok (Glendora HS) for a 7-0 lead. Sok (2 for 3, 2 runs, RBI, SB) singled in pinch-hitter Allegra Cisneros (South Hills), who led off the inning with a double to right field.
Leading the way for No. 3 seed Mt. SAC (36-5) was freshman catcher Taylor Jaurique (Wilson HH HS) with three hits. Jaurique (3 for 4) also scored twice and had an RBI.
The Mounties pounded out 16 hits in the game.
In the circle, Kennedy-Cummings allowed only a first-inning single, which was erased by a strike to second base by Jaurique getting the runner on an attempted steal. After her only other base runner by way of a walk, Kennedy-Cummings (13-2) retired the final 16 Chaffey (26-13-1) batters, including nine strikeouts.
Mt. SAC, which has won four state titles since 2003, took a 4-0 lead in the first inning as the first four batters (Sok, Jeffress, Jaurique, Rodriguez) all scored. The fifth batter, freshman right fielder Alyssa Rasso (Corona HS), hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Rodriguez. Rasso was 2 for 2 in the game.
