Sweeping a home doubleheader against Lassen on Monday propelled the Shasta College softball team into at least the co-championship of the Golden Valley Conference.
Whether Shasta (14-6 GVC, 19-17) will remain tied for first or become the outright conference champion hinges on a Tuesday doubleheader between second-place Feather River (12-6) at third-place College of the Siskiyous (11-7). COS could play the spoiler with a win.
The Knights won their first game Monday 4-3 and the second 9-1. Hailee Nicholls was both games' winning pitcher. A quartet of home runs energized the day's offense for Shasta.
In game one, Nicholls (12-2) went seven innings, giving up three runs — one of them earned — on five hits while striking out eight batters and walking two. She also was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Tayler Zazueta was 1 for 3 with a home run in the fifth for two RBIs. Emily Harvey was 1 for 2 with a home run in the second for an RBI.
Nicholls gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts in the second game. She also went 1 for 3 with a double. Katrina Barron went 3 for 3 with a stolen base and three RBIs including a home run in the fifth. Tayler Zazueta was 1 for 3 with a home run and RBI in the fourth. Jessica Pathero was 1 for 1 with an RBI.
Playoffs seeding is set for Saturday while the NorCal quarterfinals start May 6.
