DONOVAN AND CHANG EACH SMACK THREE HOMERS AS #1 CSM TOPS CCSF 27-0
Harlee Donovan had an amazing 12 RBI's and hit three home runs to add to her state lead in both categories as College of San Mateo's top-ranked women's softball team defeated host City College of San Francisco, 27-0, in a 5-run abbreviated Coast Conference North contest in Pacifica. The Bulldogs slugged nine homers.
CSM, a unanimous No. 1 among the state's 89 community colleges in the coaches association poll, ran its season opening winning streak to 16 games and Coast North record to 3-0. CCSF fell to 0-7 and 0-2.
Lauren Berriatua pitched the first three perfect innings, striking out all nine batters, to gain her state-leading tenth victory and lower her pacesetting E.R.A. to 0.28. The sophomore out of Notre Dame (Belmont) ranks No. 4 in K's with 73 and is also batting .559 after a 3-for-3 day at the plate that included a pair of solo home runs. Lacie Crawford was also great in relief, striking out nine, walking none, and giving up the only hit by the Rams.
Half Moon Bay grad Donovan was 5-for-5 at the plate, scoring four times. The freshman right hander now has 11 homers and 38 RBI's and leads Northern California with a 1.386 slugging average.
Kaitlin Chang (Capuchino) hit the ball over the fence for the first time this season – and wound-up doing it three times to ring-up six RBI's. She is hitting .417 and slugging .806.
Designated player Leilani Akai hit a 2-run homer in her only at bat, raising her batting average to .515 and slugging mark to 1.061
Melina Rodriguez went 3-for-5 and scored five times, raising her batting average to .617, No. 3 in the state. She is slugging 1.000. CSM has three of the state's 13 players with slugging marks of 1.000 or better.
--The Bulldogs return to action Saturday (Feb. 28) to host a pair of non-conference opponents, College of the Sequoias (6-9) at 10 a.m. and College of the Siskiyous (6-5) at 2 p.m. Siskiyous will also play at CSM Sunday at 10 a.m.
