BERRIATUA'S 1-HITTER FOR CSM SOFTBALL SETS DOWN OHLONE, 10-0, IN 6 INNINGSSAN MATEO – Harlee Donovan extended her state home run lead to seven with a three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning as College of San Mateo put a mercy-ending to a 10-0 women's softball victory over Coast Conference North Division rival Ohlone College Thursday.
San Mateo, which cemented its claim to state top ranking with a sweep of the 2014 state finalists last weekend, has started conference play with a pair of mercy games this week and is 13-0 overall. CSM has outscored its opponents, 150-11.
Lauren Berriatua (8-0) lowered her state-leading ERA to 0.17 with a one-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none. The sophomore righthander faced just 20 batters, two over the minimum for six innings. The Notre Dame Belmont grad also had two hits, an RBI, and scored a run.
Designated player Leilani Akai had three singles and five RBI, raising her batting average to .500 and RBI total to 19 (No. 5 in the state).
Melina Rodriguez, the state's No. 4 ranked hitter at .667, had a pair of hits and scored twice, as did Kaylen Smith.
Donovan is slugging 1.125, Rodriguez 1.056, and Akai 1.000. Donovan is No. 2 in the state with 21 RBI.
CSM got the only run it really needed in the first inning when Rodriguez led off with a single and later scored.
Ohlone fell to 5-5, 1-1 in Coast North.
--CSM will host a non-conference twin bill on Saturday, facing Columnes River of the Big Eight Conference at 10 a.m. and Fresno City College of the Central Valley at 2 p.m.
