Riverside City and College of San Mateo continue neck-and-neck race atop football polls
SACRAMENTO - Riverside City College and College of San Mateo are deadlocked, each with 242 points, in this week’s poll of California Community College football coaches, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. San Mateo had five first place votes and Riverside four, with No. 3 Saddleback gaining the other top nod. The trio are the only unbeatens (all 6-0) remaining in the National (state championship) Division.
The California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Poll has the teams just as tight but Riverside garnered 9 of 11 first-place votes to overtake San Mateo and move into the No. 1 spot. Only six points separate the two teams, according to the CCCSIA.
San Mateo had displaced former leader Riverside by one vote in the previous poll. CSM, allowing only a state-leading 7.5 points per game, will be tested this week by reigning state champ and No. 16 Laney (3-3) -- which is fresh from upsetting previous state champion City College of San Francisco, 13-10, in a Bay 6 League opener.
Riverside, leading the National Division in scoring at 46.0 (No. 2 overall), hosts Southern League co-leader Golden West (3-3 overall) on Saturday. Saddleback, prepping for a Nov. 16 finale with Riverside, visits Orange Coast. The Central League pits opening round winners No. 14 Mt. San Antonio at No. 8 El Camino. No. 10 Cerritos visits co No. 20 San Diego Mesa.
While Modesto and Ventura tied for the No. 4 position this week, four other teams each moved up one position in the top ten: No. 6 Canyons, No. 7 Butte, No. 8 El Camino, and No. 9 American River.
No. 15 Chaffey (7-0), with a state-leading 17-game winning streak after blanking Los Angeles Valley, 73-0, remains the top American Division team. The Panthers host Santa Ana (2-4) in the Metro League Saturday.
