CSM SMACKS VISITING CANADA, 13-1, IN BASEBALL SEASON OPENER
SAN MATEO – Juan Gonzalez and Daniel Slominski each had three hits as host College of San Mateo opened the 2016 baseball season with a convincing 13-1 victory over district rival Canada College on Saturday afternoon.
Gonzalez, a sophomore catcher, had three RBIs. He brought in the Bulldogs first run of the season with a line single past second base in the first inning to score Nick Adgar from second.
Slominski, a freshman designated hitter, had five RBIs – including a triple and a double -- and scored twice.
CSM exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Gonzalez had a two RBI single and Slominski a three RBI double in the frame.
Sophomore pitcher Cameron Greenough (out of Sequoia High) got the win, throwing three hitless innings and striking out a pair of batters. CSM coach Doug Williams was able to use six pitchers in the opener, with none allowing more than one hit (total of three hits). "Closer" Tommy Watanabe struck out three batters swinging in the ninth to end it. The San Mateo staff totaled ten K's. Williams was able to have 22 players see action in the game. The Bulldogs had 11 hits.
Sophomore right fielder Brad Degnan (from Woodside High) had a two RBI double down the right field line in the third inning and also scored twice. Sophomore shortstop Mike Riesner had two hits and scored two runs.
NEXT: San Mateo, ranked fourth in Northern California in the coaches association pre-season poll, hosts No. 11 Solano College (0-1) on Thursday (Feb. 4) at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs conclude the week by visiting Solano in Fairfield on Saturday at 1 p.m. Solano has played one game, losing to Canada, 6-2.
