CSM continues to roll over Bay 6 foes, 66-3 at Chabot

HAYWARD – College of San Mateo continues to roll over its Bay 6 League opponents, the latest a 66-3 victory at Chabot College in Hayward on Saturday afternoon. The defending state and league champion Bulldogs took a quick 21-0 first quarter lead over the host Gladiators.

CSM rushing leader Nate Sanchez played in his first league game this season, briefly -- running seven yards for the only touchdown the Bulldogs needed to complete a 65-yard first quarter drive. His 21 yards on four carries on the drive would be the only action on the day for the sophomore out of Serra High. He has totaled 322 yards this season.

NorCal National Division Passing leader Anthony Grigsby played only the first half for the third straight (league) game. He still raised his pacesetting collegiate efficiency rating to 169.7, completing 10 of 12 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns. That put him over the two thousand yard mark for the season at 2,113, despite the limited action in B-6 games.

--The Bulldogs have two Bay 6 games remaining, both at home – against San Joaquin Delta (1-2) on Nov. 4 and co-league leader City College of San Francisco (3-0) in the Nov. 11 finale.

CSM completely controlled the Chabot game, scoring on offense, defense, kick return, scoop and score, and kicking. The winless Gladiators were at a net minus five yards rushing until they got a 9-yard run on the next to last play. San Mateo totaled 407 yards to 118 for Chabot.

CSM's second score came off a punt blocked by Darian White inside the 10-yard line. Jermaine Hargraves returned the ball for the TD. San Mateo took a 21-0 first quarter advantage on a 63-yard pass play from Grigsby to Anthony Freeman, who caught the ball in stride over the middle halfway to the end zone and sprinted in untouched.

San Mateo was opportunistic whenever the defense rattled the Gladiators, producing seven sacks (all by different players). The Bulldogs offense did not allow a sack.

Chabot was buried on a sack by Roan Poulivaati and QB hurries by Pau Reed and Krishna Clay on its first possession of the second quarter, then snapped the ball over the punter on fourth down. The Bulldogs took over on the Chabot 28 and needed just four plays to hit paydirt on a 1-yard run by Julius Tikiosuva.

Arona Mata'u scored on a 1-yard pass from Grigsby in the second quarter, completing the signal caller's work for the day. The defense produced the last TD of the first half.

Ezra Funa, a 6-3, 300-pound lineman scooped a Gladiator fumble and rambled 35 yards to make it 42-0 at halftime.

Second half highlights included an 88-yard kickoff return for a TD by Nate Carr. Caleb Ojeda added a 37-yard field goal to his nine conversion kicks for another 12-point scoring day, running his NorCal-pacesetting season point total to 67 points (No. 2 overall in the state).

Alex Grado led the Bulldogs offense after the intermission, completing 6-of-9 passes for 76 yards -- to maintain a 171.9 efficiency rating. Raymond Price had a 6-yard shuffle pass to Jonaven Kuhn late in the fourth quarter to close out the day's scoring.

Matthew White was the game's top rusher, with 86 yards on 11 carries.

Tashi Dorie punted three times for a 48.7 yard average, raising his "state-pacing" season average to 41.7. He still is below the minimum of 3.6 punts per game needed to officially qualify, since San Mateo does not punt often.

Dominique Lampkin had six tackles for San Mateo (five solo). Cyrus Durham and Valentino Foni each had four tackles (including tackles for loss).

--CSM has now, it its first three league games, outscored opponents, 188-17. The 66 points each against Laney and Chabot are the highest totals for the Bulldogs since 2016 (69-20 win against Sierra, a foe that included Brandon Aiyuk, now a star receiver for the SF 49ers).
