Las Positas bounces back with 5-1 win over Contra Costa
Sophomore Saul Gutierrez (Tracy HS) posted his second hat trick of the season, scoring three times to help lead the Las Positas College men's soccer team to a 5-1 win over visiting Contra Costa College on Wednesday.
Today's victory moved the Hawks to 3-1 this season and followed up a disappointing loss last week that saw Feather River College score three late goals to erase a two-goal LPC advantage.
Gutierrez currently leads the state with eight goals and 18 points. His third goal of the contest in the 40th minute gave Las Positas a huge 4-0 lead at halftime. Sophomore Sebastian Preciado (Livermore HS) added a goal in the 60th minute to close out the Hawks' scoring.
Contra Costa scored its lone goal in the 65th minute but the LPC defense tightened up to squash any chances of a repeat of last week's outcome.
Freshmen Garrett Aslup (Amador HS) and Miguel Cortez (Patterson HS) split time in goal for the win. Freshman Dominic Giusto (De La Salle HS) also scored a first-half goal for the Hawks.
"Today was a good result for our program," said LPC head coach Andy Cumbo. "We had some players banged up from last week's game and a lot of players stepped up and contributed to our success today."
Las Positas returns to action on Friday (Sep. 10) when the Hawks host Merritt College in a 6:30 p.m. non-conference game.
